To Buff or Not-To Buff? That is the question!

Of course, even with these conditions met, the floor might need not a cleaning or buffing but a refinishing of your hardwood floors which is another subject altogether. This is completely different from a waxing that might occur on a weekly basis. Waxing just gives the floor a temporary sheen and will highlight any imperfections in the floor, a buffing’s sheen will last much longer and may cover up any imperfections.

So, assuming that your floors just need a buffing, the process is very simple but still require an experienced flooring technician. We’ll explain the cleaning or buffing process below…

Firstly, a machine known as a stripper is used to clear away the top layer of polyurethane on the floor. Then the floor has a buffer passed over it to clean the exposed flooring. Various coats or polyurethane are applied, as well as a sealant to protect the floor’s sheen and top layer. The floor is buffed once more to evenly distribute the sealants and polyurethane and give the floor a very shiny, reflective outer.

It’s important to note that the entire floor will need to be buffed, not just a specific area, like a small stain or discoloration. This is due to the fact that the rest of the floor will be unprotected and will be even more likely to need a cleaning or buffing in its near future. Also of major importance is the skill of the person doing performing the Buffing work.

Too much pressure on the stripper or buffer and the floor will be irreparably damaged. Too little pressure and the floor will not be cleaned adequately.
